TSV 1860 MUNICH 0 BORUSSIA DORTMUND 2

Dortmund, needing to qualify for the UEFA Cup to save their season,
held on to sixth place with two goals from Ewerthon.

TSV 1860 were down to 10 men when defender Martin Stranzl was sent off
in the 40th minute for bringing down Ewerthon in the box. The
Brazilian striker converted the penalty and was on target again on the
hour after a fine pass from Torsten Frings.

Played on Saturday:

HAMBURG SV 2 VFL WOLFSBURG 0

Hamburg kept alive their slim hopes of playing in the UEFA Cup with
their first victory of the year in this northern German derby.

Bosnia midfielder Sergej Barbarez opened the scoring from 20 metres in
the 18th minute and midfielder Christian Rahn doubled the advantage
two minutes from time.

The 1983 European champions moved up to eighth place, a spot above
Wolfsburg.

VFB STUTTGART 1 BORUSSIA MOENCHENGLADBACH 1

VfB Stuttgart held on to third place but undermined their title
chances with just a point against strugglers Borussia
Moenchengladbach, who snatched a draw courtesy of a late goal from
Czech striker Vaclav Sverkos.

The home side started well, opening the scoring through Hungary
striker Imre Szabics in the fifth minute, but gradually lost control
of the game.

SC FREIBURG 2 HERTHA BERLIN 3

Hertha Berlin moved off the bottom with their second victory in a row
but survived a scare after building up a 3-0 lead.

Germany defender Arne Friedrich put the visitors ahead with a low
drive from 20 metres in the 24th minute before setting up midfielder
Andreas Neuendorf for Hertha's second shortly before halftime.

Striker Giuseppe Reina seemingly put the issue beyond doubt from the
edge of the box in the 63rd minute but Freiburg then mounted a brave
challenge, reducing the arrears courtesy of an own goal from defender
Michael Hartmann in the 76th minute and a late penalty from Georgia
midfielder Levan Tskitishvili.

EINTRACHT FRANKFURT 1 HANSA ROSTOCK 1

Eintracht Frankfurt have gone three matches without defeat but wasted
a chance of leaving the relegation zone by dropping their guard in the
closing stages.

Brazilian defender Chris headed Eintracht into the lead in the 39th
minute and they looked in control for most of the game but Rostock won
a share of the points thanks to Sweden striker Magnus Arvidsson in the
82nd minute.

HANOVER 96 2 BAYER LEVERKUSEN 2

Fourth-placed Bayer Leverkusen recovered from two goals down to escape
their third defeat in a row.

Hanover's American striker Clint Mathis opened the scoring from the
edge of the box after a brilliant solo run five minutes from the
break. Greek defender Kostas Konstantinidis doubled the home side's
lead from close range three minutes into the second half.

Bulgaria striker Dimitar Berbatov pulled one back with a headed goal
in the 65th minute and Brazilian forward Franca gave Leverkusen a
share of the points six minutes later.

VFL BOCHUM 1 BAYERN MUNICH 0

Champions Bayern Munich lost a league game in Bochum for the first
time in nearly 20 years after a nervous defensive display.

Denmark striker Peter Madsen exploited a blunder by the Bayern defence
to hit the winner from inside the box in the eighth minute.

Bayern, who held on to second place on goal difference, woke up after
the break but were denied by a string of brilliant saves from Bochum
goalkeeper Rein van Duijnhoven.

COLOGNE 0 SCHALKE 04 2

Cologne returned to the bottom of the table while Schalke moved one
spot up to sixth with their fourth away victory in succession.

Belgium defender Nico van Kerckhoven headed home from a free kick for
the visitors in the 25th minute. Substitute striker Michael Delura
completed the Gelsenkirchen side's victory with a header from a free
kick in the 81st minute.
