Upgrading from gnome to gnome-without-systemd possible?

Talk status
This discussion is done as of 2016-04-23.

Thanks a LOT for now having gnome without systemd and your fine documentation here. I don't have systemd but installed gnome and it work so so. I boot into a system prompt and after logging in start X and gnome with startx. It works.

Is it possible just to upgrade to gnome without systemd more or less as described or should I uninstall the current gnome altogether and start all over again (as described)?

Did anybody do something similar I would like to do?

Olivier

Hi Olivier apologies just saw your post here when making an edit to the main page - for some reason my mail system swallowed the page change notification ><
Anyway, I believe if you are already on OpenRC, you should just be able to upgrade directly after installing Dantrell's overlays, no need to uninstall GNOME first. See his comment here .
Hope that helps! If you have other questions, there's a thread on the Gentoo discussion forum about Dantrell's overlays here .

Restructuring in light of official support for OpenRC GNOME

Talk status
This discussion is done as of 2019-04-27.

As GNOME 3.30 is now officially supported for OpenRC (~arch atm), dantrell has suggested to me the following restructuring of this page, to reflect the new reality:

FILE email from dantrell
<snip>
Now that Gentoo has a systemdless GNOME I contacted NeddySeagoon to bounce off some ideas about facilitating the transition for users who prefer official support.

My end goal for the Forums is to create a clear distinction between Gentoo's work and my own (with emphasis on Gentoo's work). I'd like to accomplish the same for Wiki page.

My thinking is that GNOME/GNOME_Without_systemd should turn into an index page with a table instead of an instructions page. Perhaps something like this?

    Status      Implementation                              Available Versions
    Official Gentoo's GNOME for All Init Systems 3.30+
    Unofficial Dantrell's GNOME Without Systemd Project 3.14+

New instructions for Gentoo's work would be added and what's currently at GNOME/GNOME_Without_systemd will move elsewhere resulting in 3 Wiki pages:

    GNOME/GNOME_Without_systemd
    GNOME/GNOME_Without_systemd/Official
    GNOME/GNOME_Without_systemd/Unofficial

This is just a rough draft so feel free to reword things and of course, if you have your own ideas please let me know.
<snip>

Seems sane to me, but if anyone has any other views / thoughts / objections please post them here. Otherwise, I'll aim to action this w/c Monday 15 April 2019. Thanks! -- Sakaki ( talk ) 17:13, 7 April 2019 (UTC)

Why not

   GNOME/GNOME_Without_systemd
   GNOME/GNOME_Without_systemd/Gentoo
   GNOME/GNOME_Without_systemd/Dantrell

to be consistent with the forums support topics ? -- NeddySeagoon ( talk ) 21:32, 8 April 2019 (UTC)

I've just implemented a first cut of this, following NeddySeagoon's suggested taxonomy. Also migrated to passive voice per guidelines. -- Sakaki ( talk ) 13:59, 27 April 2019 (UTC)
