README.TXT

prepared 1 April 2002

These public domain scores are created using a commercial software package
called Finale (see www.codamusic.com), and are saved in that program's
proprietary .MUS format. They are not MIDI files, and require special
software in order to use them.

However, it is not however necessary to own Finale in order to view, print,
play and to some extent even edit the music. Specifically, there is a
downloadable "reader" program called Notepad 2002 available from the CodaMusic
website. It is available for free, in both Mac and PC binary formats. Once
installed, opening a .MUS file will launch the program. The program uses
common window navigation controls and a standard "tape deck" style interface
to the audio controls (just click the green arrow to play a file!). For further
information regarding the use of the other controls on the toolbar, please
consult the Index located under the Help Menu item.

There are numerous other high quality software packages, and that the
selection of this format for an initial release is in no way meant to
endorse or preclude any alternative. Specifically, Project Gutenberg
intends to make available musical selections from the Public Domain
in all formats for which there is interest. We welcome your comments
and/or suggestions Feel free to contact Project Gutenberg or Geof
