time of writing, they gave the permission to distribute the
applications freely for non-commercial use.

For licensing details contact Caldera (http://www.caldera.com/).

Packages:
---------
gemsysge.zip	GEM System Master Disk
gemdrvge.zip	GEM Driver Disk
--
gemdrwge.zip	GEM Draw 2 Installation Disk
gemdr2ge.zip	GEM Draw 2 additional graphics files
--
gemwplge.zip	GEM 1st Wordplus Installation Disk

All files are ZIP archives, which can be unpacked using PKUNZIP
or WINZIP or comparable tools.

All programs are German versions, but they follow the same logic
as all other GUI, so you should be able to handle it.
------------------------------------------------------------------

Package 1: GEM Desktop Installation
-----------------------------------
Step 1: Generate the disks
You need at least two formatted DOS disks for unpacking.
HD disks will be able to hold the complete content, for low
density disks you will have to split the files and change the
   disks during setup.

   - Extract the ZIP-file gemsysge.zip to disk 1
   - Label disk 1 as GEM System Master Disk
   - Using the LABEL program, give the disk the label GEM SYSTEM
(Attention: 2 spaces between GEM and SYSTEM)

   - Extract the ZIP-file gemdrvge.zip to disk 2
   - Label disk 2 as GEM Driver Disk
   - Using the LABEL program, give the disk the label GEM DRIVER
(Attention: 2 spaces between GEM and DRIVER)

!!! Disk labels are important, they are checked during setup.

Step 2: Setup GEM
Insert disk 1 and start the batch-file gemsetup.bat.
This will guide you through the setup process.

   - select the drive (you cannot select a directory !)
   - select a mouse driver
     * for a mouse using a mini DIN connector you will most
       probably need IBM PS/2 mouse
     * for a serial mouse using a 9 pin sub-D plug use the
       serial mouse from Microsoft
   - add printers, plotters, ...
   - if you are done, select
"sichern und setup beenden" which is equivalent to
     save and end setup.

ATTENTION: during setup the program will ask you to change
disks. However there may be cases, where the setup
program does not find the appropriate file on the
	      disk.
The reason is, that the disk images have been
recreated by guessing from some old and partly
corrupt disks, so some files may be on the wrong
disk and some files may be missing completely.
If you encounter such a problem, please contact me
and I will try to put the correct files on the
	      archives.

NOTE: If you have picked the wrong mouse driver, you might
find it difficult to quit GEM without shutting down
the PC. Use Ctrl-Q to quit GEM from the keyboard.
------------------------------------------------------------------

Package 2 and 3: GEM Draw, GEM 1st Wordplus
-------------------------------------------
Step 1: GEM Draw
   - Extract the ZIP-file gemdrwge.zip to a disk
   - Start GEM
   - From the install disk start the program INSTALL.APP

Step 1a: GEM Draw - additional graphic files
   - Extract the ZIP-file gemdr2ge.zip directly to the preferred
     target directory

Step 2: GEM 1st Wordplus
   - Extract the ZIP-file gemwplge.zip to a disk
   - Start GEM
   - From the install disk start the program INSTALL.APP

------------------------------------------------------------------

Why use GEM ?
-------------

Personally, I like it. The most important things are:

- it runs on any PC style machine from XT to Pentium Pro
- it support Hercules Mono, EGA, VGA
- it runs with all DOS versions I have (MS-DOS 3 and higher,
  DR-DOS 5 and it might even run with MS-DOS 2, CP/M 86, ...).
- it is fast
- it installs on less than 2 MByte disk space
- it allows for very nice graphis (GEM Draw)

Especially the GEM Draw tool is very nice for creating graphics.
I haven't worked a lot with GEM 1st Wordplus.

Good luck
