INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
======================================================

To install OpenGEM, decompress the zipfile named "OGEM3D.ZIP" to any
folder in C:\. This will create six files.

- OGEM3.ZIP
- INSTALL.BAT
- README.TXT
- LICENCE.TXT
- UNZIP.EXE
- CHOICE.EXE

Run INSTALL.BAT to begin setting up OpenGEM. The OpenGEM Installer will
ask you to select which hard drive to install OpenGEM to, and will unpack
the OpenGEM distribution for you.

After you install OpenGEM you will notice a file called "FGCONFIG.SYS" in
your root directory. Add the lines from this file to your "CONFIG.SYS" file.

That's it!

To run OpenGEM just type "GEM" at the command prompt.

OpenGEM contains mouse and sound drivers. These load automatically when
you start OpenGEM. To stop them loading simple edit the GEM.BAT file.
The necessary changes are clearly labeled. You can find GEM.BAT at the
root of the drive you installed OpenGEM to.

IMPORTANT: Please see LICENSE.TXT before using this software.

You can find all the documentation on the GEMAPPS\HELPZONE folder in TXT
format. There is also HTML help inside the OpenGEM distribution. Run GEMWeb
and select "bookmarks" to access it.

NOTES
======================================================

This is Release 3 of OpenGEM. It should therefore be both stable and
fully working, though we cannot accept any liability for anything it may
do to any computer that you install it on. If you find an error with
OpenGEM please report it so that it can be fixed! Do also check the
OpenGEM website at http://gem.shaneland.co.uk for updates and bugfixes.

While OpenGEM can (and does!) run without upper memory (memory above
the 640kb base that DOS uses by default), it does not do so automatically.
To enable upper memory you have several options. FreeDOS HIMEM.EXE and
EMM386.EXE are included with this distribution in the \GEMAPPS\GEMSYS
folder. You can add them to your CONFIG.SYS file with the following
commands:
DEVICE=C:\GEMAPPS\GEMSYS\HIMEM.EXE
DEVICE=C:\GEMAPPS\GEMSYS\EMM386.EXE
This should give you more memory to run applications.

======================================================
KNOWN ISSUES
======================================================

(1) If OpenGEM is installed to a drive other than the C: drive some
applications may not work. Also, when you try to open the "Applications"
folder on the desktop you may receive an error message saying: "Sorry, but
the Directory name you have entered exceeds the maximum number of
characters."

(2) The file BDCS4235.EXE in GEMAPPS\GEMSYS\SETUP\SOUND is incorrectly
identified as containing the virus Jugo.3548 when scanned by Panda Platinum
Antivirus. BDCS4235.EXE is a sound driver, and contains no virus. The false
report may happen because of heuristic scanning or because there's a bit of
code in the Borland Pascal runtime that is also in Jugo.3548. If you are
using this driver as the GEM sound driver you may also get a virus warning
for the file C:\GEMAPPS\GEMSYS\SOUND.EXE. This is the same file, and the
warning should be ignored.

If you discover an issue with OpenGEM please report it by emailing us at
gem@shaneland.co.uk

OpenGEM 2.2.0 - 1st October 2003
              * Redesigned SETUP.BAT to move to a modular design. Sections
                to be setup are now kept in seperate locations:
                \GEMAPPS\GEMSYS\SETUP\VIDEO.BAT
                \GEMAPPS\GEMSYS\SETUP\SOUND.BAT
                \GEMAPPS\GEMSYS\SETUP\DESKTOP.BAT
