                             February 1987

Welcome to GEM WordChart. This file contains general information you
should be aware of as you become familiar with and use GEM WordChart and
   corrections to the manual.

Please read the release notes included with your GEM WordChart manual.

Installion on a Hard Disk Other than C:
---------------------------------------

If you want to install GEM WordChart on a hard disk that has a disk
identifier other than C, follow these steps:

   1. Open the hard disk icon where you want to install GEM WordChart in
the top window of the GEM Desktop(TM).

   2. Insert your GEM WordChart Master Application disk in drive A.
Double-click on the drive A icon in the bottom window.

   3. Double-click on the INSTALL.APP icon in the bottom window. GEM
WordChart will be installed on the hard disk you have opened in the
      top window.

Numbers and Letters:
--------------------

Note: This information pertains to systems with low-resolution
graphics cards such as 640x200 or 640x350.

If you have a low-resolution system and are using the 20-point Dutch
font when you choose Numbers and Letters from the Options Menu, you may
notice that pieces of certain characters remain on the screen as text is
moved. You can remedy this condition by clicking on the scroll bar or
moving the slider to redraw the screen.

GEM WordChart Line with 14-Point Fonts:
---------------------------------------

When you select a 14-point font, GEM WordChart uses a 7-point font to
display your text on the screen. The printed version of your wordchart
   will use a 14-point font.

If you type more than 128 characters on a line, line wrapping might not
occur and characters may be lost.

Starting GEM WordChart Directly from the Operating System:
---------------------------------------------------------

After you've installed GEM WordChart according to the manual, you can
start the program from the DOS command prompt without having to go
through the Desktop. To begin a new WordChart session from the DOS
   command prompt, type:

	GEM WORDCHRT

Note that you should issue this command from the root directory. When
you end a WordChart session that you've started this way, WordChart
returns you directly to the operating system.

Outline Templates
-----------------

If you are creating a wordchart using the outline template and attempt
to convert to a different outline template, an alert box appears that
   reads:

CHANGING TO TEMPLATE WITH FEWER COLUMNS
WILL DELETE 1 OR MORE COLUMNS ON THE RIGHT
		SIDE OF YOUR WORDCHART

   The alert box should read:

CHANGING TO TEMPLATE WITH FEWER ROWS WILL
DELETE 1 OR MORE ROWS ...

Corrections to the GEM WordChart Manual:
----------------------------------------

Section 1, "Getting Started"

Page 1-2, Additional information about the GEM WordChart DATA DISK:
If you have GEM WordChart on floppy disks, it's a good idea to have a
couple of spare formatted disks available. Use the New Folder...
command to create a WCHARTS folder on each spare disk. If you run out
of space on the GEM WordChart DATA Disk, you'll always have a disk
available on which to save your work. Otherwise, your work may be lost.

Page 1-5, STARTING DIRECTLY TO A WORDCHART:
You can start GEM WordChart by double-clicking on a WCH document only if
the document is in the WCHARTS folder. However, once you are in GEM
WordChart, you can open any wordchart in any folder by using the Open...
   command and the Item Selector.

Section 3, "Tutorial"

Page 3-4, Addtional information about WCH and GEM item types:
As noted on page 3-4, GEM WordChart produces two versions of each
wordchart, one with a document type WCH and the other with a document
type GEM. If you acquire only the WCH version of a wordchart (as is the
case with the sample wordcharts provided with GEM WordChart), do NOT try
to output it until you do the following:

   1. Start GEM WordChart.
   2. Open the WCH version of the wordchart.
   3. Immediately choose the Save command from the File Menu.

This creates the .GEM version of the wordchart. You can then safely
   output the wordchart.

Pages 3-7 and 3-8, Printing Your WordChart:
The instructions for printing your wordchart are for an earlier version
of the GEM Output program. The appearance of GEM Output differs from
the description given on the bottom of page 3-7 and the top of page 3-8.
The "output list" is present in the newer version of the program, but
there is no dialog with "Printer" high-lighted. Instead, you'll see a
row of device icons on the right side of the screen. The high-lighted
device is the one that GEM Output will use. In most systems, the first
device icon, the printer, is high-lighted when GEM Output is started.
See the GEM Desktop manual supplied with your GEM WordChart package for
   detailed information about GEM Output.

   Page 3-8, Step 3:
Type SAMPLE_L.GEM and then press the Enter key.

The border's name is SAMPLE_L.GEM, not SAMPLE-L.GEM. (See the
correction for page 4-29, later in this READ.ME.)

Page 3-10, Correction to second sentence of paragraph after Step 3:
The sentence in parentheses should read:

(If you've followed the tutorial so far, the template should have a
border, and the text body should have check marks and only seven rows.)

The footer should still be part of the template.

Section 4, "GEM WordChart Reference"

Page 4-14 (and throughout the manual), Point Sizes:
The toolkit shown in the manual (pages 2-1, 3-2, 3-6, and 4-14) includes
a 14-point text size. 14-point type is available only on high-
resolution systems. High-resolution systems use the IBM(R) Enhanced
Graphics Adapter(TM), Hercules Graphics Card(TM), or compatible
graphics cards. See the information about 14-point fonts earlier in
   this READ.ME.

Note: Wordcharts that contain 14-point type cannot be opened by GEM
   WordChart on a low-resolution system.

Page 4-26, Additional information about the Remember Template command:
In outline templates, the Remember Template command remembers the
   following:

   * all toolkit attributes (bullets, text style, text size, etc.)
   * margin settings
   * the total NUMBER of fields in the text body, but not their arrangement

GEM WordChart always remembers the text body in its "default" (initial)
arrangement. For example, suppose you have a three-level outline
arranged A-B-C-C-A-B-C-C. You add a second-level entry at the top of
the outline, making it A-B-C-C-B-C-C-A-B-C-C, and then choose the
Remember Template command. GEM WordChart remembers the eleven fields in
the text body like this: A-B-C-C-A-B-C-C-A-B-C.

If you have made extensive changes to the text body and do not want the
default arrangement of the fields, use the Use Template from... command,
   as described on page 4-28.

If you frequently use the Remember Template command, we strongly
recommended that you use the DOS Check Disk command regularly.

Note: Dual floppy systems require at least 16K on the application disk
when using the Remember Template command. We recommend that you delete
the two 36-point screen fonts located on the application disk.

   Page 4-29, Borders:
The naming conventions for borders have been changed. All border names
now end in _P or _L (for Portrait or Landscape); they retain the GEM
   type.  For example, LOGO_P.GEM identifies a Portrait-type border;
   CRT_L.GEM identifies a Landscape-type border.

Page 4-29, Correction to the note:
Note: The border you use in your wordchart does not have match the
wordchart's format. You CAN use Portrait borders with Landscape
wordcharts (or vice versa); however, the borders must not contain text.
If the borders do contain text, mixing border and wordchart formats can
   produce unpredictable results.

   Page 4-31, Step 3:
Before you proceed to Step 4 (to add the locator rectangle), select all
the visible parts of the border and choose the Make Group command. You
can use the rubber rectangle or shift-click to select all the parts of
   the border.

If you need to change the position of the locator rectangle in the
border, you can select the visible group and choose the Put in Back
command. Then de-select the group and select and move the locator
rectangle. When you're finished, don't forget to use the Put in Back
command on the locator rectangle so that it is again the first element
   in the border.

   Page 4-31, Step 4:
The locator rectangle has two additional requirements:

   * You cannot use the "None" fill pattern. Any other fill pattern is
acceptable, but it's probably easiest to use the solid fill.

   * The locator rectangle should be 1/2-inch inside the innermost elements
of the border on all sides. To make this measurement in GEM Draw, go
to the Full page view and then display the ruler.

Page 4-32, Adding a Colored Background:
If you add a colored background, several actions--including using the
zone markers--can cause unpredictable changes in the appearance of the
wordchart on your screen. As noted in the manual, your wordchart is
actually unharmed, but you might want to avoid colored backgrounds if
you find the on-screen effects displeasing.

Page 4-32, Modifying a Wordchart to Fit a Border:
The problem described in the first sentence of this section can also
arise in templates that do not contain text. In addition, the third
   solution should read as follows:

   * Use the zone markers (described earlier in this section) to increase
the amount of "white space" between rows in a zone.

This will probably require some experimentation, but here is the
principle behind it: When fitting a template into a border, GEM
WordChart scales the template down horizontally and vertically. If the
zones or rows are already so compressed that there is not enough room
for vertical scaling, you see the alert described in the first paragraph
of this section of the manual.
