Funding and Support

Funding and Support#

Eclipse SUMO is an open-source project of the Eclipse Foundation, maintained and developed by a dedicated community of committers from several organizations.

Keeping SUMO reliable, up to date, and continuously evolving requires sustained effort and funding. Much of this work is currently supported through collaborative research projects, but additional funding is needed to ensure ongoing maintenance and further development.

You can help support SUMO by collaborating with us on research projects or by funding the development of specific features and bug fixes through our implementation partners.

Research Projects#

If you are planning or already working on a research project involving SUMO, consider collaborating with one of the partners listed below. They can contribute their expertise, support your project, and help develop new functionality that benefits the entire SUMO community. We also welcome opportunities to prepare joint research proposals and funding applications. To explore possible collaborations, contact one of the partners directly or reach out via sumo-dev@eclipse.org (registration is required to post to the mailing list).

Fund a Feature or Bug Fix#

If you need a specific feature or bug fix and would like to speed up its development, you can commission one of the implementation partners listed below. This is paid development work rather than a donation. The resulting changes are intended to be integrated into SUMO, making them available to the entire community.

Here's how it works:

  1. Check the issue tracker to see whether your request already exists. If not, open a new issue describing your needs.
  2. Contact one of the implementation partners below and refer to the issue.
  3. Agree on the scope, cost, and timeline directly with the partner.

We also highlight issues that could particularly benefit from financial support with the fundable label.

Contracts and payments are handled directly between you and the implementation partner, not through the SUMO project or the Eclipse Foundation.

Implementation Partners#

The organizations listed below can support your SUMO-related projects through research collaborations, technical expertise, or commissioned development. Feel free to contact them directly to discuss opportunities for working together.

If you or your organization would like to be listed as an implementation partner, please contact us at sumo-dev@eclipse.org (registration is required to post to the mailing list).

German Aerospace Center (DLR)#

DLR is Germany's national aerospace and transport research center. Its Institute of Transportation Systems specializes in traffic modeling and intelligent transportation systems. DLR initiated the development of SUMO in 2001 and has remained its leading contributor ever since.

As a publicly funded, non-profit research organization, DLR primarily engages in collaborative research projects, particularly those supported by German, European, or other suitable funding programs. Direct contracting for specific development or consulting services is also possible.

To discuss potential collaborations, contact sumo@dlr.de.

Consultancy for Engineers (co4e)#

co4e GmbH is a Berlin-based spin-off of the German Aerospace Center (DLR), providing technology consultancy and specialized software solutions for systems engineering. The company also develops SESAM, a collaborative cloud platform for building digital twins and running mobility simulations based on SUMO - for humans and agents.

co4e offers a range of services to support SUMO users and projects:

  • Training and hands-on workshops to build SUMO expertise
  • Consulting and technical support for applying SUMO in research and industry projects
  • Development of new SUMO features and enhancements to existing functionality
  • Design and implementation of SUMO-based simulation projects

To discuss potential collaborations or commissioned development, contact robert.hilbrich@co4e.com.
