I added support for HD44780 compatible displays only. I tested 8 bit wiring and that worked well (check out the /docs dir for more about the connection to your pc).
There is one mysterious thing:
the LCDd daemon only works in debug mode on my system. Therefore it produces a lot of unused debug messages (you can redirect it to /dev/null). I also put the release version to the tgz file. Probably you have more luck.
Instruction:
 Daemon: 
   LCDd -c /etc/LCDd.conf > /dev/null
 Client:
   lcdproc C T &   # Shows the CPU state and the systemtime. type lcdproc --help for more...
